Box Description:
Mysteries still surround the Aztex Sun Stone, the most studied and perhaps the most iconic work of all Mesoamerican art. The original twenty-six-ton stone was carved in the late 1400s; after the Spain conquest it lay buried face down for two centuries. Discovered in 1790 by workers leveling Mexico City's main plaza, the stone is a cosmogram - an image representing the Aztec's concepts of space and time. In The Aztec Cosmos, artist Tomas Filsinger renders the stone's carved face with its elements colored according to the Aztec codices. He has also written a thirty-two-page booklet - included with this puzzle - that sheds light on the meaning of many of those enigmatic elements.
