To Sleep, Perchance to Dream, 2005, by David Bradley
Acrylic on canvas, 18 x 34 in.
David Bradley often creates his vibrant social critique by skewering the commodification of Indian culture in art. In this, his take on Henri Rousseau’s 1897 Sleeping Gypsy, an Apache Indian’s land is devoured by tourist development as he sleeps. Above, “Ghost Riders” herd clouds of cattle across the sky. Bradley is an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa tribe and received training at the Institute of American Indian Art.
