Description:
The Empire Marketingg Board was established in 1926 by the British colonial government to promote trade between the British public and th far-flung British colonies and self-governing dominions. Between 1926 and 1933, the board commissioned many well-known and emerging artists to design hundreds of colorful posters intended to turn the British people into Empire-conscious consumers by encouraging them to see the Empire as an ethical concern. In this poster by Hugh Williams, a Union Jack is used to suggest a port, with ships anchored on the blue "ocean" of the flag while goods sit on the red stripes, ready to be loaded onto the cargo ships, and vehicles and figures move about. Each red "arm" of the flag is marked with a destination of one of the British Empire's vast colonical holdings, including West and South Africa; Australia, New Zealand, and the South Seas; India and Ceylon; the Irish Free State; and Canada.
