In "The New Dress" by Vittorio Reggianini we have the bonus of a picture within a picture. In a richly gilded frame an idyllic pastoral scene painted in hentle shades of pink and green graces the wall of an elegant room. Below the painting Reggianini has depicted a happy family, dressed in rich fabrics, in the height of fashion, enjoying a light meal whilst seated at a gold pedestal table. The table is covered with a beautiful detailed lace-edged cloth. A well-behaved bound stands obediently, his collar a blue satin bow. Two prettily dressed little girls make a charming vignette in the foreground as the infant displays er frilled dress and presents her mother with a bouquet of summer roses. Everythiing in thispainting exudes extravagant wealth but the overall effect is one of domestic happeniss and contenment. The flowing pink satin of the lady's gown, the rich red draps and upbolstery and the gold decorated furniture is reflected in the highly polished floor.
An artist of high calibre, Reggianini has here called upon his skill with colour to present a delightfully lit scene og an artistoratic past. Born in Modena in 1858 Vittorio Reggianini became a pupil at the Modena Academy. Eventually becoming a Professor of the Academy he was famous for his richy coloured and beautifully executed family scenes, of which this is a superb example.
